This Monday we’re back with another spectacular gig of original music from the London scene, lead by the pianist Sam Leak.
Sam Leak Quintet
Sam Leak – piano
Freddie Gavita – trumpet
George Crowley – saxophone / clarinet
Calum Gourlay – double bass
James Maddren – drums
Composer and pianist Sam Leak has been steadily cementing his position as one of the UK’s most prominent and prolific young musicians over the last few years. One of the most highly-demanded players on the London scene, Sam’s work has seen him playing with legendary UK figures such as Stan Sulzmann, Gareth Lockrane and Martin Speake and his own band ‘Aquarium‘ has turned many a head, making the top 10 international jazz albums of 2011 list in Mojo magazine, and other plaudits besides.
For this gig, Sam has assembled an exciting new band to play his original compositions, including a long-form suite influenced by sounds as eclectic as free jazz, gospel and european traditional music, amongst others. This promises to be a really special gig, with fantastic music coming from some of the UK’s finest and most exciting young musicians.
‘Sam Leak is one of the brightest young stars in the jazz piano galaxy, a heavenly improviser and a brilliant prospect for the future’ Helen Mayhew, Jazz FM
‘Multi-faceted and smart as a pin, this is poetic chamber jazz of the highest order’ MOJO Magazine
