Monday September 10th: Matt Robinson Quintet

We’re back from our Summer break at Jazz @ The Oxford, with a band lead by a very exciting and award-winning young pianist, Matt Robinson!

Matt Robinson Quintet

Matt Robinson - piano / compositions

Josh Arcoleo - tenor saxophone

Alex Munk - guitar

Tom McCredie – double bass

Dave Hamblett – drums

Matt Robinson grew up in Wakefield and began studying piano from an early age. He was first introduced to jazz through school and the local jazz club and took lessons with Jamil Sheriff in Leeds. Since moving to London in 2008, Matt studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Tom Cawley, Nikki Iles, Liam Noble and Gwilym Simcock. He was awarded the Edwin Samuel Dove prize and a Yamaha Jazz Scholarship upon graduation.

As well as forming a quintet and a trio with some amazing musicians and friends, Matt has been lucky enough to perform with some inspiring people such as Stan Sulzmann, Jim Hart and Josh Arcoleo. In September 2011, he was invited to be part of the Worshipful Company of Musicians Annual Jazz Medal event, held at the Pizza Express Jazz Club. In July of 2012, Matt’s group performed as part of the Proms Plus Late series at the Royal Albert Hall, which was later broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

Matt’s Quintet is completed by young Kenny Wheeler prize-winning tenor saxophonist Arcoleo, whose debut record Beginnings has been raved about this year, the impressive and highly sought-after guitarist Alex Munk, dynamic bassist Tom McCredie and brilliant drummer Dave Hamblett (Ivo Neame, Abram Wilson).

It’s very exciting to be able to kick off what will be a very heavy season at The Oxford with this fantastic band of rising starts on the UK jazz scene. Come and join us!

As ever, doors at 8:30, music from 9pm; entry only £5

We hope to see you there.
